52 Weeks – 13 and counting

This week featuring Billy Paul’s ‘Lets make a baby’. My Dad bought this for my Mum in the mid seventies, probably about 9 months before my brother appeared. I don’t know what concerns me more. That my Dad thought this would work as foreplay or that my Mum fell for it. Either way, its a little disturbing.
Lots of other stuff thrown into this weeks track, including the same 50′s educational record that I used on ‘Secrets to a successful marriage’ on the Memorabilica album.

52 Weeks – Week 12

This weeks track is influenced by the ‘Silent Movie’ album by Quiet Village. A beautiful album that somehow manages to escape sounding sugary in any way, it’s soundtracked many a summers day here in Perth – and quite a few peak hour freeway marathons.

I’ve spent the last week soaking it up again and it feels like its somehow infused in this track – hopefully I’m not offending too many Quiet Village fans…..

And for the record – there’s no Nelly Furtado in sight ;)

52 Weeks – Week 11

This weeks track is probably my favourite of the lot so far. I’m not sure if its because it came together so quickly, whether it’s because I love the source material so much or because it drops the F bomb and I feel very rebellious. Sampling, amongst others, The Duritti Column and The Eels, the bendy guitar balearicness kinda suits the hot West Oz nights we’ve had in the last few weeks. Maybe that’s what I’ll blame.
Oh, and language warning on this one, just in case the little ‘un’s are around.
As always I’d love to hear what you think – it’s good to know someone’s listening other than my poor family……

52 Weeks – Week 10

I broke out the vocodinator and my trusty old mic to record something a little different this week – wait, come back, please don’t go……..
I wrote the lyrics to this track 10 years ago (almost to the month) and it’s been knocking around ever since, waiting for some backing music to take the focus away from them. So, for the first time on the interspace here’s me singing - albeit through a device that makes me sound like a slightly gay dalek.

52 Weeks – Week 9

Getting closer to the end? Not the most uplifting title for a track that, according to one friend of mine, sounds like something off of The Loveboat. It does however tie in with the sampled lyrics which this week come courtesy of Mavis Staples. Never heard of her? Well I’m embarressed to say that neither had I until her latest album – a collaboration with Wilco’s main man, Jeff Tweedy. Go dig out ‘You are not alone’.

52 Weeks – Week 8

My love for Dr Winston O’Boogie knows no bounds. I’ve bored many poor folk at the pub dissecting his life. His later stuff, especially Double Fantasy, wasn’t well recieved critically but for me it’s up there with his best – melodic, honest and incredibly poignant. Before I start filling up – and covering ground already well covered – this weeks track samples one of his home made recordings. I was going to dedicate it to my other half but she couldn’t care less and I’m about as romantic as a weekend in Skegness.

52 Weeks – 7 weeks and counting…

The new Joan as a Policewoman album is a bit special. If you like your soul with a dash of indie or your indie with a sprinkling of soul then this cup of tea is for you. The track standouts are plenty but the original of ‘Flash’ really get’s under your skin – so much so in my case that I decided to ruin it. Its a little subtler than previous remixes under this guise but continues the Found Sound erm, sound.

52 Weeks – Week 6

February 14th 1985. Foreigner are number one with ‘I want to know what love is’ and I had found the soundtrack to my unrequited love. Phillipa Chapman. If only you had seen me wink at you across the playground, we could have been so good together.

52 Weeks – Week 5

The bring back big beat campaign starts (and probably ends) here. This weeks newie is a blatant rip off from an old Northern Soul stomper.  Beats, bumps, dirty acid bassline and lots of vocal chops – its like 1998 all over again but with less hair and a touch of arthritis. I’m not selling this very well am I.

Ok – big stomping massive dancefloor action with bouncy bits – bout sums it up.
